Purpose Statement 

 

The job of Student Nutrition Worker I was established for the purpose/s of preparing and serving food items to the students and school personnel, performing cashiering duties, and maintaining food service facilities in a safe and sanitary condition. 

This job reports to Student Nutrition Manager.

 

Essential Functions 

  • Arranges food and beverage items (e.g. placing in steam tables, displaying, filing racks, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining required orderly, clean and sanitary conditions. 
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities. 
  • Cleans utensils, equipment and building areas as assigned (e.g. carts, dishes, pans, tables, counters, storage, food preparation and serving areas, etc) for the purpose of maintaining required orderly, clean and sanitary conditions. 
  • Loads carts for the purpose of ensuring that food and/or beverage items are available for meal service times. 
  • Monitors kitchen and cafeteria areas for the purpose of ensuring a safe working environment. 
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by Student Nutrition Manager and Student Nutrition Worker II for the purpose of filling in for other areas due to absenteeism or unexpected special events. 
  • Performs cashiering duties (e.g. count money and make correct change) for the purpose of completing meal transactions. 
  • Prepares food and beverage items as assigned (e.g. salads, pizza, cold food items, etc) for the purpose of meeting mandated nutritional and projected meal requirements. 
  • Serves food and beverages (e.g. salads, fruit, cold food items, hot food items and beverages, etc) for the purpose of meeting mandated nutritional requirements and/or requests of students and school personnel. 
  • Stocks food, condiments and supplies (e.g. checks for expiration dates, etc) for the purpose of maintaining adequate quantities and security of items. 
  • Verifies free and reduced meal applications for the purpose of determining eligibility under program guidelines, if requested by manager. 

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications 

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices, operating equipment used in quantity food preparation, and preparing and maintaining accurate records. 

 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: food handling and sanitation practices, cash handling procedures, and safety practices and procedures. 

 

ABILITY is required to and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances, work with data utilizing defined but different processes, and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with others, working as part of a team, communicating with diverse groups, working with children, meeting deadlines, and working with frequent interruptions. 



Responsibility 

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines. 

 

Working Environment 

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 20% walking, and 75% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and in some hazardous conditions.

 

Experience Job related experience is desired.

 

Education High school diploma or equivalent.
